How to Import a Forklift from China: A Practical Buyer's Guide

More and more warehouse operators and logistics companies are choosing to import forklifts from China — and it makes sense. China builds close to half of all forklifts sold globally, and prices run 30–50% below what you'd pay for a Japanese or European brand with similar specs.

But buying heavy equipment from overseas isn't like ordering parts on Amazon. Get the process wrong, and you could end up with a machine stuck at customs or one that doesn't meet local safety codes. Here's how to do it right.

Why China?

China exported over 545,000 forklifts in 2025. That number keeps climbing because Chinese factories offer something hard to beat: a complete supply chain under one roof. Motors, batteries, hydraulics, masts, tires — everything is made within a short drive of the assembly line. That cuts production costs and lead times.

For electric forklifts specifically, China has an even bigger edge. The country produces around 80% of the world's lithium-ion batteries, so Chinese-made electric trucks tend to offer better battery specs at lower prices.

Step-by-Step: How the Import Process Works

1. Know Your Specs Before You Call Anyone

Write down exactly what you need before reaching out to any supplier. We've seen buyers waste weeks going back and forth because they weren't clear on basics:

  • Capacity: 1.5T? 3T? 5T?

  • Lift height: Standard 3m mast, or a triplex mast for double-stacking in containers?

  • Power type: Electric for indoor warehouse work, diesel for construction sites, LPG for mixed environments?

2. Find a Real Factory

Thousands of "suppliers" on B2B platforms are actually trading companies — they don't make anything. To filter them out:

  • Check if the company has a verifiable factory address (Google Maps satellite view helps)
  • Ask for export records: which countries, how many containers per month
  • Look for real certifications with certificate numbers — not just logos on a website

3. See the Factory

For any order over 5 units, a factory visit is worth the trip. Can't travel? Ask for a live video walk-through of the production line. If they won't show you, move on.

A good manufacturer is happy to show you their welding, painting, and testing facilities. That transparency tells you a lot.

4. Negotiate the Right Way

Don't just haggle on the unit price. There are other terms that matter just as much:

  • MOQ: Some factories require a full container (4–6 units), others will ship a single machine.
  • Incoterms: FOB = price covers delivery to the Chinese port. CIF = shipping and insurance to your port included.
  • Payment: The standard is 30% deposit, 70% before the container ships (or against the Bill of Lading).

5. Inspect Before It Ships

Hire a third-party inspector (SGS, Bureau Veritas, or a local QC firm) to check the machines before they leave the factory. What to look at:

  • Hydraulic system under pressure — any leaks?

  • Battery capacity test (for electric models)

  • Weld quality on the mast and counterweight

  • Safety features: does the dead-man switch actually cut power?

Skipping inspection to save a few hundred dollars is a bad trade.

6. Shipping Options

Method When to Use Notes
FCL (Full Container) 1–4 forklifts A 20ft container fits one 3-ton unit. Best value.
LCL (Shared Container) Single unit Works, but higher risk of transit damage.
RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) Machines over 10 tons They drive it onto the ship. No container needed.

7. Customs Clearance

Have these documents ready before the ship arrives:

  • Commercial Invoice + Packing List

  • Bill of Lading

  • Certificate of Origin

  • CE (Europe), EPA (US), or other regional certifications

Missing paperwork = your machine sits at the port, and you pay storage fees every day.

8. After-Sales: The Part Most Buyers Forget

Ask these questions before you sign anything:

  • What's the warranty? (Look for 2 years or 3,000 hours minimum.)

  • How do you ship spare parts — sea freight or air?

  • Is there a technical support contact who speaks English?

A manufacturer who dodges these questions will disappear when you need help most.

What Does the Whole Thing Cost?

Here's a rough breakdown for importing a 3-ton electric forklift to Europe:

Item Range
FOB price (at Chinese port) $8,000 – $15,000
Ocean freight (40HQ container) $1,500 – $4,000
Customs duty
0% – 10% (varies by country)
Insurance ~0.3% of cargo value
Port handling + local trucking $300 – $800
The biggest cost variable is the FOB price itself — it depends on battery type (lead-acid vs lithium), motor brand, and mast height.

Three Expensive Mistakes

Picking the cheapest quote. If one supplier is 40% below everyone else, something is wrong. Usually it's refurbished engines, thin steel, or knockoff controllers.

Ignoring certifications. A non-CE forklift can't legally operate in the EU. A non-EPA engine gets seized at US customs. Confirm compliance before production starts.

Leaving specs vague. "As discussed on WhatsApp" is not a contract term. Every detail — mast height, battery brand, tire type, paint color — should be written in the Proforma Invoice.

Ready to Get Started?

The process is straightforward once you know what to watch for. The hardest part is finding a manufacturer you can trust — one that's upfront about pricing, realistic about timelines, and available when things go sideways.

At HITOP, we've exported to 84+ countries. Whether you need a single unit to test or a container load for a fleet, send us a message and we'll put together a quote.
